THE MASTER TEACHER- Six Ways To Prevent Summer Learning Loss
Questions to ponder
· How can teachers prevent significant learning loss with students during
the summer months?
· What have you, as a teacher, done to address this problem with your students?
· What suggestions do you have for parents for the summer?

You are appreciated all year, not just this week!
SPECIAL LUNCHEON
Thank you to Robin Fleegal and the Culinary students for preparing the scrumptious luncheon for us on Friday, to culminate Teacher Appreciation Week. It was a great way to end an eventful week.
Thank you to Soyoun Choi and the enthusiastic parents who provided the wonderful International luncheon for staff on Thursday. All enjoyed the sumptuous variety of foods from around the world.
OUTSTANDING OPPORTUNITY-
Congratulations AND thank you to Jim Hill, teacher of World Religions, on leading a field trip to The University of Maryland to hear the Dalai Lama speak. Our students were very fortunate to have received this “once in a lifetime” opportunity to hear from one of the world’s most influential people. This was an excellent example of learning outside the classroom.
Thank you to Michelle Pappadia for sharing her interest and expertise with practical uses for the iPad in the classroom. She has creatively used the iPad with colleagues for IEP development, record-keeping, etc. These techniques and applications have effectively streamlined otherwise tedious processes.

The Senior Prom for the class of 2013 is now in Centennial history. By all accounts, the event was a successful endeavor. The students looked and behaved appropriately and there were smiles everywhere. Much of the success of the Prom was due to the work of Katie Grimm and the many staff volunteers who gave their time on Saturday. We thank them and we are very appreciative of their efforts and support. Also, we thank Mike Guzzotti and Mark Perry for their aid in security.
Congratulations to Al Corvah, the newly elected Student Member of the Board of Education for 2013-2014.

· How does creativity look in your classroom?
· Can we increase creativity in our classrooms without measuring it?
· What problems can arise with assessing creativity?
· How can you nurture more creativity within your content area?
ATTENTION! Procedure Change!
Students in Howard County Public Schools are prohibited from wearing clothing, which is disruptive to the educational process or is deemed unsafe.
Procedures:
Staff member (s) will ask the student to remove/change the attire and notify the front office of the student’s name. If the student fails to comply, the parent/guardian will be notified and appropriate action taken. Teachers will notify the front office so Administration can keep track of students who are inappropriately dressed.

Thank you, in advance, to all faculty and staff volunteers who will give their time and effort to make the Senior/Junior Prom a memorable event. Our students are indeed very lucky to have such a committed and caring group of people to work with.

Thank you to all teachers for your support in making this event a reality for our students, particularly all period 3 teachers who worked with students on follow-up activities.

Faculty Reminder-
The April faculty meeting will take place in the media center on Monday, April 15 at 2:20 p.m. Please be prompt as we have much to cover.
Graduation, 2013
Merriweather Post Pavillion reserves the right to schedule concerts until April 15. This is because they can present a concert with just six weeks of lead time. Usually, graduation dates are given much sooner. This is obviously not the case this year. Therefore, we hope to receive a date on Monday.
It’s Spring Again!
With the advent of the spring season and a change in the weather, many students are testing the boundaries of school rules. Please assist us in reminding your students about their responsibilities to adhere to all regulations like:
Student Dress Code
Students must drink only water from clear containers.
We need your help to make this the smoothest spring ever!
The Master Teacher- You Really Can And Must Make Learning Fun
Questions to Ponder;
· Does “fun” have a place in a learning-centered classroom? Should it?
· Are there strategies you can use in your classroom that will make your content more enjoyable for teaching and learning?
· What are some limitations of using “fun” in the classroom?

THE MASTER TEACHER- You Must Measure What Matters
Questions to Ponder:
· What steps can you take in your classroom to improve the balance between content and skills?
· What role do appropriate measurement tools play in your classroom?
· What are some results of measuring the wrong things through your assessments?

THE MASTER TEACHER: Tap The Power: When Students Talk About Their Learning
· Master teachers are aware that lecture does not produce the best student learning.
· Clear connections between writing, listening, thinking, and talking facilitate deeper learning.
Questions to Ponder:
1. How do you integrate the CCSS for speaking and listening into your instruction?
3. Do you do most of the talking or do your students?
QUOTE OF THE WEEK
“My favorite teacher makes me feel like I’m her only student.”
